Vendors in Lilongwe have welcomed with enthusiasm, President Dr.
Joyce Banda’s offer to meet with them and discuss ways of how she can
help to boost their businesses in the country.
Chairperson for Vendors’ Association of Malawi James Yelayela Soko told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that President Banda’s offer was excellent and timely especially now that the vendors are struggling to find a healthy capital and legal vending places.
He said this will make those whose businesses are behind the line to have a chance of making profits and earning more after selling their goods.
“Once we meet the president, we will tell her to assist us with capital and places where we can allocate those who do not own their plots to conduct the business,” explained Soko.
He said with the growing congestion in the markets there is a need to have another place where they can be accommodated.
During a mass rally she conducted at Mazengera Primary School Ground in Lilongwe the President said, “I have managed to source motorcycles for my boys who ply bicycle taxi services (Kabaza) throughout the country and this week we are graduating some who have been thoroughly trained and they are going to be issued with licenses.
“I have been wondering if our vendors have an association I can work with and offer them loans to boost their businesses and to this effect, I have already initiated the process because I have talked to a Mr. Binali to organise that.”
The Malawi President, who has more than once said she grew up selling flitters (mandazi), described herself as “vendor number one” and that she would never allow “fellow” vendors to suffer when she could help them.
Soko has since said the vendors are eagerly looking forward to the meeting.
